Meet Evan Smith

Born and raised in Charleston, Evan focuses his practice almost exclusively in the family courts of South Carolina.  After graduating from Clemson University, he returned home to obtain his Juris Doctorate from the Charleston School of Law.   While in law school, he was a founding member of the Phi Delta Phi international legal fraternity and actively engaged in many of the pro bono opportunities supported by the school.  Evan was drawn to family law due to the daily opportunity to help his clients through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

We have decided to divorce, where do I start?

The first step in my process is assisting clients to become organized, I help them put together a clear picture of all of their assets and debts.  The benefits are threefold, the client has an understanding of the marital and separate estate, it is empowering when someone is able to control of his or her financial landscape and when they are meeting with other professionals they are able to have effective meetings.

What is the most important part of the work you do?

Educate, an informed client is able to make educated decisions and come to agreements that are in their best interest.  I help clients understand the long and short term implications of the decisions made during this extremely challenging time. I also help manage expectations, it is imperative that an individual and/or couple be realistic about the outcome of the divorce.  Far too often I see people believing that their financial life will be better after divorce, that is not a typical outcome.  Typically, tough decisions need to be made about the family home, investment accounts, returning to work and every other aspect of our lives that are impacted by this decision.

How do you work with other professionals?

I work closely attorneys to create a division of property that is reasonable and meets the legal standards.  But there are many other professionals that I involve as well, including those specializing in: real estate, mortgage, credit, health insurance, property and casual insurance, accountants, career councilors, movers, therapists.  Each situation requires different outside assistance but having experts available to answer questions and become a support team for a couple or individual is a tremendous benefit.

"Evan's knowledge of SC Family Law and his experience with the SC Family Court system helped me to have peace of mind during my separation and divorce...I can wholeheartedly recommend Evan to anyone who needs an honest, professional advocate."

Ms. Moore, Daniel Island, SC

"Please be advised that in the 1' half of this year I had the fortunate opportunity to use the real estate services of Ms. Terri Seignious of Charleston. I have known Terri personally for quite a few years and can sum up a remarkable aspect of her nature in one
word.. "tenacity." She applies it in her business career to the same degree she does in her personal life, which is considerable.

I am no stranger to real estate agents in that I have spent 35 years in the real estate development business. I have met and worked with hundreds, both residential and commercial, and I have developed a sense of what separates the "good" agents fiom the "great" ones. It's the spark...the desire, and she's got it.

The sale of my home was a complicated mess, from both personal and physical issues. It was worth approximately $1,500,000. In a market where the average list-to-contract time was 8 to 9 months, Terri organized the marketing, advised and organized the repairs, and put the home under contract in a little over 60 days. She followed up on every detail and had no qualms about "pushing" the various parties when it came time to push.

I have no reservations about recommending her to you wholeheartedly.  If you want to get it done... she's your woman! "

Mr. Harrison, Mt. Pleasant, SC

"I just wanted to thank you for being exactly what I needed during this difficult time in my life.  I fell like I am pretty strong with finances but when it came to my divorce, I was lost.  You helped me keep my perspective and showed me how to move ahead.  I thought I wanted to keep the house at any cost but once thenumbers were laid out I saw that this wasn't the right decision for me and my kids after all.  Thank you and I don't know what I would have done without your sensibility."

Mrs. Hibbard, Sullivan's Island
